Q: Why did my alignment just go down?

There are 4 most common reasons why the alignment of a good character may go
down:

1. You attacked or killed a good-aligned npc.
2. Your alignment gravitated slightly to your base alignment.
3. You grouped with a player on Elbereth's list.
4. You spent too much time as a metamorph on the Istari Quest.

Here is a more detailed explanation of how and why this may happen.

1. You attacked or killed a good-aligned npc.

If you killed a humanoid npc that doesn't look distinctly evil, chances are
that he was good.

2. Your alignment gravitated slightly to your base alignment.

Whenever you are on-line, your alignment slowly gravitates (up or down)
towards your base alignment. Your base alignment is the alignment you have
when you first log on after creating the character.

The highest possible base alignment is 'well-meaning', as shown on your info,
therefore it should be no surprise to you if such decay makes you lose the
'sent to Arda' alignment.

The good news is that alignment decay is very slow. Killing a few evil mobiles
should easily restore you whatever you lost by decay.

3. You grouped with a player on Elbereth's list.

You can get Elbereth's touch if you were grouped with someone who is on
Elbereth's list (see help elbereth), that is someone disliked by Elbereth for
behaviour unworthy of a good person, typically for murder of good people.
Type 'stat' to see whether you have Elbereth's touch. Elbereth's touch causes
your alignment and your will to drop.

The good news: it will go away on its own after a while and, when it
disappears, your alignment (and will) will go up.

4. You spent too much time as a metamorph on the Istari Quest.

This particular feature might change in the future, but for the moment the
behaviour of your alignment while you are in metamorph shape is not easily
predictable.

Note that while these are the most common reasons for alignment dropping, there
are also a few other, extremely unlikely, situations that may cause it (such
as, for example, using energy drain). These situations are so unlikely, that
chances are that one of the 4 reasons listed above was at fault.
