New server linkspeed

Post by aldea »

When the server was located in norway my link usually was below 35ms but after the move to *.ch my link has detoriated to 150-200ms and sometimes its around 250ms (which i find unplayable). I've tried traceroutes from different locations around europe including from where i play from (*.se) and it seems that my link is the worst among the tested servers. The most weird thing is that my ISP lookingglass shows a 35ms link to the new server which is exactly the speed i had to the old Mume server in Norway. So, anyone else playing from europe experiencing the same drop in linkspeed after the move ?

Sample link to new server.

Ok, so a standard american link to mume is 200-250ms, anything changed after the server move ?
Some european players must be better off since they now are physically closer to the mume host.

Thanks for reply.

Afaik the average american link is now faster than it was to the old server, though not by much, but still. At least that's what I've heard from the americans I've talked to...

I have heard of some people from Eastern Europe that got worse links after the move, but a clear majority weren't really affected (since the difference is quite small) and some got a better link. Of all the Americans I've spoken to they have gotten better links, and in some cases a lot better.
I think I heard of some 60-70ms from Florida, which is what my link is at now and I can't say that there is any real difference from my old link, which was 17ms.

Thanks for reply, i find it pretty amazing that my ISP show 35ms link to the new server while i playing get a 250ms link.
When testing via my ISP looking glass they might use their backbone link to check ping times but the difference shouldnt
be that huge. I had a 30-35ms link to the old server in norway with the same ISP btw.

Try to run traceroute from your own machine [1]. That should help us better figure out where exactly the rather large delay is coming from.

Ok, i am doing a traceroute from my own network now (i am also firewalled, like the Mume server, see timeout hop 13 below.) Now this is strange, all
of a sudden i get a 40-45 ms link but at the same time the ingame command link still show 200-250ms ?

I think that's normal, the two ways of pinging use different methods of reaching the result. For example I get 192ms with the "link" command and 63ms by pinging pub1.heig-vd.ch from command.

So it seems my case is solved, ii dont have a 250ms link to the new Mume server but a 50ms link.
Below is a ping output, average is 49ms which isnt that bad.
