Linkdrop/ Novoid and Sundeath

Post by Ortansia »

Hi
Can anyone explain me how does these 3 actions work :)?
Well as far as I understood ... I set up linkdrop command each 10 sec , then when I lose link in sunny area . If Im not affected by Novoide, I will disappear into void, and therefore I don't sunrip.

But what if I set up linkdrop command each 10 sec , then I lose link in sunny area, and Im affected by Novoide . Which means I won't disappear into void . Do I sunrip after all?
I mean Im like 80% of my mume session affected by novoid :p , if it has to do with sunrip, so linkdrop action won't help me much :(

The help file about sundeath stipulates :

oO W>help sundeath
SUNDEATH

Trolls can be instantly killed by the sun. Trolls sundie:

- With link, in sunlit areas.
- Without link, in sunlit areas, when affected by NOQUIT or NOVOID.

Trolls don't sundie:

- Without link, in sunlit areas, when not affected by NOQUIT or NOVOID.

These deaths are "permanent" and reduce the character to level one.

See also: REBORN

It is somehow confusing :p . If someone can enlighten me. You are welcome !

Yup, if no-void is on, you'll still sunrip regardless of a dropped or functional link.

That said, the timer keeps counting down even after you lost link - so maybe it'll expire before sunup, then you'd void. But not something you can count-on.

Anyone know what the lengths are for novoid vs. noquit? I.e. from combat in crossrace pk, sameside pk, or mob. With sameside noquit, does it affect both the attacker and the attackee, or just the attacker?

Weird I just logged in and grinder told me:
Grinder tells you 'Set linkdrop if ya dont wanna turn to stone.'

So maybe something has changed.

I guess the issue is that sometimes the game can't tell that you've been disconnected... so it won't ever void you in that case. I'm not sure what the circumstances that lead to this are or how frequently they might happen.

Oh well after some research I found this message on Troll board :p
14351#: The definitive guide to novoid and sundeath (Frór)

oO W>read 14351
Message 14351 : The definitive guide to novoid and sundeath (Frór)
Written on Mon Mar 13 18:42:03 2000

Whenever a Troll has an unfortunate meeting with sunlight, a new thread
appears on this board denouncing how evil novoid is, and why it would be
such a good idea to make trolls immune.

As I said before several times, novoid does -not- increase your chances of
sundeath. At all. You might not believe my words, but you should definitely
believe experimental evidence: this log by Frortroll.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Open Plains
You are in the middle of nowhere, with nothing to shield you from the sun.
If the Yellow Face caught you here, you would doubtlessly sundie.

*>time
According to the Dúnadan calendar, it is:
9pm on Sunday, the 11th of Winterfilth, Year 2983 of the Third Age.
You don't feel well outside.
It is nightfall. The last rays of the sun are peeking over the horizon.

*>help winterfilth
Dawn 6 Dusk 20

*a Dwarf* says 'BOO!' *** Return: continue, b: back one page, r: redisplay, q:quit (55%
***
nine minutes. He still has novoid. This is what Fror sees:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Day has begun!

*>look
Open Plains
Frortroll the Troll is standing here (Idle, vulnerable to PK, and definitely
not turning to stone)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once novoid expires, around noon, Frortroll finally vanishes into the Void,
still alive.

If Frortroll had unwisely typed a command while the Sun was still up, he
would have sundied. If his link had gone sour too soon before dawn, and
he hadn't had automatic linkdrop set up, he would have sundied as well.

Conclusions:

- If you sundie, don't blame novoid
- If you have any doubt on your link, use 'change linkdrop'

I'm sorry if I spoiled one of the favorite complaints of Trolls; however,
you can still whi^H^Hrite interesting posts about Trollish OB.
Im not sure , It seems like novoid doesn't cause sundeath while linkless but the actual "help sundeath" stipulates that :

Trolls can be instantly killed by the sun. Trolls sundie:

- With link, in sunlit areas.
- Without link, in sunlit areas, when affected by NOQUIT or NOVOID.

So Im kinda confused :p ? Or the message of Fror is too old?

I think the logic behind Fror's comment is that even if novoid prevents you to void while linkless, you still wont sundie, because you will have IDLE flag which will prevent you from sundying. I guess the information about IDLE flag protecting from sundeath should also be mentioned in HELP files.

@Elestir how long does Idle flag take to show up?

In my opinion , Idle flag show up just after disappearing into void .And as far as I remember I never had idle flag while I was affected by novoid but I might be wrong tho ....
