Death Of MUME?

Without a steady supply of new players its destined for death or coma even with the hobbit movies coming which will probably cause a fluctuation. The learning curve is so huge there's no point in trying to learn. And if you dont have an experienced player and group to xp with and learn from constantly you truly are screwed. Not to mention all the lvls youll lose to mob death and bad luck just trying to get legended then the way pk takes place its mainly just spam spam spam which still can be fun at times but is spamming close door get all corpse bash bash bash really fun. I hope mume lives on but the number of players will dwindle to even fewer diehard players. Its basically that way now which makes it even worse for newbs since your average players have so much mume time logged.

I don't understand this point. I learned the game from scratch without any help, I'm sure others have and could. I did discover Gray's docs on-line at some point, which helped, but I learned a lot on my own too.

I think this is grossly exaggerated. Perhaps it depends on what you want from a game. The very things I like about a MUD -- learning how it works, learning the map, finding quests, etc., etc. -- seem to be things others see merely as hurdles to be cleared. "De gustibus non disputandum".

XP loss is no big deal at lower levels. It can be very frustrating; but then part of the game's charm is that it's a tough world. Just thank your lucky stars it is hard (but possible) to get "real death" (i.e. all the way back to level one): "You rise over your dead body under the form of a grey mist, you waver for a moment, looking to the West; but out of the West comes a cold wind that dissolves you into nothing!"

I think this is true. Combat mechanics are just too simple. The scenario of frenetically hitting hotkey for bash or attack spell while spamming "close door" may be a caricature, but it has a lot of truth in it too. And don't get me started on "hit/flee"...

The graphs would seem to show that this is a sound prediction.

This is true; it's harder for a newbie to get started, especially in PK. Existing players just know too much, so there is in effect no PK learning curve unless you redshirt; otherwise you'd just never get going.

I logged in. I haven't for a long time. On weekend. Lags and freezes. Saturday and again on Sunday. No connection to server it prompts once in a while. Where is the MUME server now? Will it be fixed when someone returns to work on Monday?
There were only few players online. I think that is THE last thing killing poor MUME, when I just cant play it. Move the server again to somewhere stable?! Or is it just one time problem?
I'm still willing to promote MUME, but like that I would not recommend it.

I do not have a good answer to the server-thing since I'm not very up to date in those matters. I understand that it is right now in Switzerland under Manwe's control simply because there's no better option right now. However, my information could be out of date.

But! Regarding the matter of whether MUME is dying or not. If we look at the raw statistics:
http://www.mume.org/Plots/index.html

Then it becomes very apparent that the first Hobbit movie has given us a very nice pump in activity. A bigger one even than I would have suspected. Of course, it remains to be seen how how long this lasts... but there's two more Hobbit movies coming out at least!

Thanks Androg for some answers. Maybe we should re-organize the donation pool for the new server like we did some years ago...
I'm also up for donation pool for the advertising on Google text ads...or any other targeted ads option, FB maybe.
Just ask people and they would like to help to make it better :)

As far as I know the lag-problems are not caused by the server. Rather, the problem is with the connection. The internet connection of the place where the server is located is just not as stable as we'd like it to be. And unfortunately there do not seem to be viable alternative options available, where to move the server.

I am a noobie and just got my first character to 22. I started playing in 2013. I recently helped a guy in the czech republic learn the basics who had never logged in before. i really hope it won't die, but rest assured new people are checking this game out on a (regular?) basis.

Having been around a little longer than Askarrd, say 15 years, I recently came back and started to group with completely unknown and/or new players. I'm glad to see there's some activity and some people sticking to it. No more than 1-2 days ago there was a mortal who completely lost it after loosing his gear, which clearly is a proof that MUME still engages!
