What happens if I give my equipment to a shopkeeper for mending, my character is saved and there is a crash or reboot?

You lose the item.

This seems like a very poor system, particularly as the old system contained a natural protection from this.

I think we can accept this solution for the time being.

Note that any item of any value that you try to mend is logged, so it's pretty easy to reimburse you should this happen.
