whining

I am very upset, so let me whining a little.

Many years ago, during university, I heard about mume from some friends (one of them was Fror!) and started playing. I remember I was killed by a slithering snake in Lane since I didn't know the command 'flee'...

At the time I didn't know anything about Tolkien, and also spoke english very badly. After many nights and many low marks at my exams I stopped playing mume.

Now I read every day LoR and Silmarillion (it is true) and I love it. So some weeks ago I decide to give a look again at mume. I chose an hobbit (of course), Dodinas son of Gorbadog, chose newbie stats for a scout with good agility and perception, and started my adventures. My target was to explore Moria and some 'new' zones like Lothlorien and Fargon, and in the meanwhile go around Arda playing, exploring and also enjoying descriptions. I am not interested in pkilling, but of course darkies are part of world.

Reading helps about hobbit I discovered it is better for me to stay barefoot. I practiced fully sneak hide backstab and others thief skils, and put only 2 on parry, endurance and detect invisible. I have 50% more or less in awareness also.

It is not an easy life or a newbie. I started looking for salt, enjoing a lot cooking my meat. My most frequent command is 'help abbr'. But there are many nice people around, rangers or good people ready to give explanations.

Today I was shocked. was killed by an orc (uzurg or something like that) in Shire with one backstab, something like 200hp. I was a level 17, was standing (so not sleeping or resting), and probably I was also sneaking (i am not sure). After going around inside Maggot' house I stopped in a room reading description and something written on a plaque (the stable of a village south of maggot house). After a sec I was dead.

I don't loose so much xp or equipment, but simply I realize there is no fun in this way. I was killed other times, one time overkilled by many darkies in a blocked area, but this time it was different. I am not able to explain.

This orc killed other newbies few minutes before: one in trf, one in the Inn inside Bree.

I hope someone can give me an explanation. In the meanwhile I quit mume.

You're experiencing a normal bout of MUME's famous "rl depression" which comes after dying. Usually it only happens with mobdeaths, but I have also had it occur during unfair pkdeaths. It should disappear in a couple days :-D

It's a scout with notracks, the second worst plague of mume (I think portals being able to transfer groups of 10+ is worse).

I guess you were stabed by ugurz :p ? . he is a zorc . He also managed to kill my puke jessy at willow when I was regaining there . He is kinda high level like around 90 as I heard . So Its normal that he can sneak and backstab easily and more over as you said he has no tracks boots so rangers and bounders won't chase him and thus makes his life easy to hang around shire and kill lowbies :p .

Your story about how you started playing mume is quite the same as mine . I also didn't know anything about tolkien and lord of the ring when my cousin got me started and I still know so a little . That's why my first character didn't have a tolkien name ( jessy) . And I remember when I started playing , I was puzzpled about wierd character's names . I even asked my cousin about it and he said they are ok , they are tolkien names ,it's your character name which is wierd :p.

Hey man, I'll XP with you any time and show you a few tricks that might help to keep you from getting backstabbed (even from Ugurz! omgomg)

I play Tarptus more often than Parrafin and for some reason I end up in so many pk situations with Ugurz... But noob as I am, I've still had fun with him once or twice :p

Sorry about your death. There are easy tricks to avoid being backstabbed, and I believe that partly because of that is why thieves/scouts can inflict so much damage with one attack. Check "help search" and "help flush" for more information. I hope you'll enjoy Fangorn and Lothlorien in future adventures, two well-written superzones, for sure.

As far as rangers and no_tracks go - don't they use find-the-path-type chasing, and not actual tracking?

I have always been wondering if detect magic spell can detect darkies with notracks? does it?

On my mage character and considering hunting darkies, should I practice "find the path"? Or practice track?

Find the path is extremely tideous to use, practially impossible to use efficiently. Get track.

If you want to play hobbit thief because of some roleplay reason that gives you a good experience, you're more than welcome to do so. If you however want a class that lets you learn the game well, I'd suggest either a Man warrior (good sturdy warriors that lets you ride real horses that has better moves than mules) or elf mage (good for solo playing, and breath of briskness spell lets you explore arda.. also stored teleports allows you to escape enemies easily.. unless they stab you dead in one backstab ;) ).
