Travel Points

Post by apathy »

The amount of travel points you gain for entering "hard to reach places" and secret rooms are noway near what you should get compared to the travel points you need per level. I Hope the management can see that the TP's are way too hard to achieve for anyone making a new character compared to the exp you need per level. Beeing reduced with every legend I made since the changes kinda ticked me off, along with the fact that I just got 39 tps for swimming to balrog keys in moria (first time I entered the zone).

I doubt im the only one who think the new TP system only works for old characters or people who're extremly crappy at exp and mobdie every session.

Reduce the amount of travel points needed or give us the means to actually get the amount we need before we get reduced.

Imho you should learn new areas. = Travel.
Tps are only annoying when you know areas and only travel to get points, but on the other hand, then they are not so hard. :)

Im not talking about getting tps to level 26, im talking about hitting level 32 having been to every zone in the game and still hit reduced as soon as I start pking. If you get 1-2 levels per day after 26 you need about 6k tps per day which I find highly unlikely to get. If you don't have this problem I guess you don't.... But tping several hours per day doesnt exactly thrill me.

The worst part is probably the extreme amount of never before visited wilderness rooms that give 0 WPs; particularly annoying when they are behind a hidden door.
If TPs are meant to force people to travel into and explore areas they would otherwise not be interested in visiting, going off the beaten roads and actually explore really ought to give better TPs than just spamming along the main roads from one end to the other.

IMO it is easier to get tps with the new system compared to the old system if you are only running around exping/PKing. However if you are running around trying to get as much tps as possible the new system makes that harder. Mostly I'd say that the new system is different, and you need to adjust your exping/PKing habits some. You can't just spam around Bree/Fornost killing those mobs from level 21 to level 26, you need to add a lot more travelling to your sessions. This doesn't at all mean that you (can) get less exp during a session, it does however mean that you need to walk some more and possibly plan your trips a little more.

The new system does have one significant (although mostly cosmetic) flaw; the way you get tps is way too random. Running through a field I ran through yesterday can give me 100 TPs but entering a room I have never ever been in with any character at all at any time (and a very secluded room I would guess almost no-one visits) can give 0 TPs.

I don't have a problem getting TPS, I simply think its an issue for new players who dont have the entire worldmap in the back of their head. Im not looking for the Valars to make changes to TP to make it easier for me to level, simply wanted to point out a problem in the game mechanics.

If you want to expand the playerbase improving the gameplay for new players is a must, MUME have a steep learning curve just trying to make it easier for new players.

But I guess thats a crime and I deserve mockery and silly "tips" for pointing it out.......

If anything new players should have an easier time with the new system due to the fact that you don't have to know any secret doors or secluded "hidden" areas to get TPs, you can get just as much from running around south east of Bree as from traveling through the Old Forest for example.

I recently made a new whitie scout and got 10k tps before I even started xping, just so that I could keep xping without stopping to tp.

The only suggestion I can think of is have a tp requirement that grows per level. It seems like most levels require 3k tps per level. But say, each level's requirement goes up SLOWLY and you don't reach the 3k tp-mark until around 25.

I also do like Kenzu and get at least 10k tp's before i start exping. When i leveled my last character i spent twice, sometimes three times more time on getting TP's than exping. I mostly played solo, but i wouldn't say that i didn't travel a lot. I just exped too fast, and for this i was punished. That makes for a very flawed system in my opinion. I had to start out each session by spending 2 hours on getting TP's before i could start leveling, it's simply no fun.

I think the new system isn't so bad, but the requirements are too high. The reason i dont make any new characters anymore is only because of TP's.

Well I think it's frivolous to talk about TP woes for pukes BNs and Trolls, because it's not difficult to tp those races really (especially pukes, there's not even any point in getting 10k before you start xping). However, Orc TP requirements imo are ridiculous, and only hurts the population.

I agree with Xaviar somewhat; I've only ever had tp problems with orcs. Trolls have such low requirements that even when you end up with tp tnl, it's pretty easy to get enough in one night. My BNs seem to magically attract tps to themselves once they get to about level 7 or so and stop ripping to rabbits. My orcs, on the other hand, never seem to have enough, even if I've done something crazy like run in Moria at level 5. I find playing close to NOC pretty boring, so I tend to play orcs like they're vampiric BNs. Orcs are supposed to be easier, but having tp tnl is a pain in the ass.

Mobripped orc by trying to TP in Fangorn... I do not think orcs (tolkien) are supposed the big Arda-Raiders and Travellers. They sit in their mountains, raid the area from time to time and sit in their mountains.

Can someone clarify why drowning dting gives -tp? not that it is a huge problem but it seems like that only discourages people from exploring new areas.

Same reason why mobdeath gives -xp. It discourages people from playing the game ? :-P

I have played this game a pretty long time and I know almost all of the areas in the game. This said, I have to agree with Razoor on this one. Exp has always been incredibly easy for me and getting tps are lowbie levels isn't too hard either. However, when you start a new character you tend to get excited over it and want to just play that character. My example of this is Morzak who i just started a few weeks back. I managed to hit lvl 26 in about a week with at least half of my play time devoted to getting tps. My last session was lvl 27 with 200kxp and 3k tps tnl with nowhere to go except for shire. I ended up mobdying during this session and my only reaction was 'well, at least tps will pop by the time I need them'. i don't think this kind of outlook helps the game

How does the TP "pop" mechanic work?

It works "on average decently", in specific too random. You enter rooms you do not know and it is unlikely someone else has been there in the last time - but gain only very little TP. If you "graze" zones (like those nswe-plains) you get a lot of easy TP (which is no problem as long as you have a char who has bob; with non-bobbers, that tp-grazing can become a bit annoying (especially when you have to spend the night somewhere non-plainish)).

All in all, I'd say TPing works very nice, but sometimes I have the impression you need too many. Especially when you are on a funny xp-run. But if you log for a TP-session with little xp from time to time, that is not such a big issue.

I never had any problems with TPs. I can't remember if I ever had only X tp tnl when past level 21. But I had quite some troubles when playing orc. It's quite unfair that trolls have such low requirements for tps (which I like very much, but still think that if they were a bit higher there wouldnt be any problems).
Is the orc requirement for TPs the same as for the whities? I never bothered to check. If it's the same, its too high.
And running (or riding) with low level orc in the sun to get TPs it's not fun at all.
