Re: Travel Points

Post by Wobbler » Fri Mar 28, 2008 11:17 am

I once got a TP in a road room inside Fornost (the one nws from the inn, can't remember its name) less than one minute after visiting it before; this was when I was going to rent, agonised after not getting TPs behind a vast number of secret doors in wilderness areas that character had never visited. Shortly after that I ended up on a two-year break.

Regarding TP requirements for Orcs and Trolls: My recently created Troll has never been all the way west to LB, never as far northeast as Crossing and never south of Mrak, yet it has TPs for more levels than my recently created Orc who has been by Broghha and Morthan...

After having grouped with some fellows and gotten to level 7, I must say that I believe that TPs TNL should really be reduced. I'm just not seeing what they add to the game, really. I understand that they're supposed to encourage exploration, but it seems that they're more of a nuisance than anything.

Last night I, as a Snaga, entered a set of rooms below a very-hard-to-return-from climb exit behind a hidden door for the first time in the 10 years I've known it existed, and got 3 TPs. I also managed to gain a whole of 7 TPs swimming underwater below the whirlpool in Moria, having tped in 30-odd zones since my last Moria trip. I really don't see how this can be seen as even remotely connected to encouraging me to explore.
If I hit reduced xp again tonight it will encourage me to go on another two-year break, however.

*agree* Wobbler
I think orcs are the only race where xp and tps are unbalanced.

I'm not so sure, Orix - from what I can tell, the problem is rather the way one gets TPs these days (just following the road from Forlond to Bree is at least as profitable as visiting Moria, for instance) and applies to all races but Trolls (who require ridiculously few TPs), although Orcs are worse off because they seem to have higher TP requirements while having a very hard time TPing west of the Brandywine.

Well yes, the problem could be in the way how one gets TPs. But I think orcs have to high requirement for TPs. I never had any trobles with TPs as whitie. And if trolls have so low requirement I think it should be lowered for orcs too. Unless you can run with white flag around BM, GH and shire and mobs won't touch you because you're only on the TP trip :D
Last time i went with my orc from NOC -> Bree -> Tharbad -> Rohan -> ABR -> and back to NOC. I think I made something like 500 TPs. I was like wtf?! Sometimes I have a feeling that orcs get less TPs than other races. But I guess thats just me.

I'm new to MUME (playing a whitie) and haven't had any issue getting TPS. Only on like lv 7 and 8 did I have any case of needing TPS instead of XP to get the next level. I've never been south of Tharbad or East of Rivendell. I do tend to walk alot though. Maybe that matters?

Of course, I end up camping alot. I'm sure my tolerance for camping and regenerating (much easier since I learned cure light) is much higher than someone who has played for years. Everything is still novel to me (except boars and waiting for shops to open.) I also solo a fair amount, not so much because I want all the XP to myself, but I'm trying to learn areas well and don't play for long sessions. People get grumpy when you XP for 40 minutes and go rent.

Aglach, that is largely because already the areas north of Morthan and west of Neni add up to a very large number of zones, many of which are only very very selectively visited by people. Combine that with the low number of players online these days and you have the result - anyone who steps of the OER between Shire and Harlond (or walks around the fields and swamps around rtf) is stumbling into lots of tps, the farther he wanders on those fields, the more he gets.

My own experience concerning "playing a whitie lowbie-midbie" tells me that it is a lot easier these days than in ~2001-2002. And that because there are fewer people online. Back then exping a lowbie in the west was extremely tedious because most of the mobs were perma-dead and some half a dozen of exp-groups were constantly cleaning the area. Nowadays even finding a group to join can be troublesome at times.

I'm happy enough with the current TP system. The only times when I've started to get reduced XP due to lack of TP have been times where I haven't been travelling much. When I travel a lot, I don't need TP. When I XP in a small area, I start to need TP. So I'm happy with how it works. But maybe there are good improvements to make.

Does North of Ingrove down ABR through OOC to south of Lorien through Moria and Dunland to Broghha, then back up via Tharbad and Bree to Old Fornost and then via Midgewater Marshes and through brush to Warrens sound like a small area for a non-legend Orc to be tping in?

I've had trouble getting TPs before...Just go exploring. Avoid regularly XPed areas, and *GASP* stop XPing for a little while

If TPS are supposed to encourage exploration, aren't deathtraps going to do the opposite (especially unrecoverable ones) for new players? I have zero desire to map Arda myself now since losing everything I had.

Most deathtraps are rather predictable from the room-name (which can be visible through "exits") or from the "look dirX".

So, from what I heard TPS used to "pop" and accumulate in rarely visited rooms up to 100 max. Like there is a set amount of TPS in the game that constantly move around.
Is this system changed to some kind of fuzzy randomness factor?
I know that there is now a first visited zone bonus feature. So question is if the old system was removed or the number of available TPS on the map reduced.

I remember reading about that bonus in the original news, but I cannot say I have actually seen it affect either of my new characters (one Elf, one Troll and one Orc).
Random seems to be more important than all other factors together.

The bonus exists, I noticed it with the new troll I made. However, it's so small (compared to the average tps needed per level) that it's useful only for newbies and trolls.

Well the real issue is that the TP-system punishes those who are skillful and efficient XP'ers, i dont think that's justifiable in any way :)

Depends on how you exp? Shouldn't be a problem really if you move around a lot... (at least it isn't in my experience)

Of course, if you re-do the same area a lot you will have troubles with tps.
