Veritasmos: people who want to build are always welcome to join. New gods usually start with either proofreading or taking a testzone, which means describing about 25 grid rooms and a few secrets. If you do well in there, you'll probably be considered as a candidate to build a full zone.

Everything starts with the Istar Quest (http://mume.org/wiki/index.php/Istar_Quest).

If someone wants to build it's always good to have a testzone written. Since we hire when we have work (a new project get's started or a builder must get replaced), that means there're short phases when "work" is available, people get hired, then - of course - there's no more work available.
Those with good testzones are more likely to get a "larger" piece of work.

Small stuff is available as well from time to time but that usually also hangs on how motivated an immortal is. Work on MUME is done voluntarily. You can ask for smaller stuff, I usually can come up with something (for example threats from mobs, I always need more threats ;))... if you finish something then is up to you.

I operate a website that gets steady traffic, so I could link to MUME on there; although, the official game of The Elf Wax Times is Modern Warfare 2.

By the way, I am guilty of creating a new account, as Veritasmos, MUME said, is not an account or character name. I'm sorry, I do not use it. Please don't erase my new account, as I am only interested in making the game better. If you must erase either account, erase any records of Veritasmos. And now that you know who I am/was, I am still eager to help edit some descriptions and stuff like that, make the place better.

But this time around, I'm mostly just in it to become good at MUME; and on that note, I was thinking I would attempt to play without a mapper program, because it destroyed my imaginative experience of the game so completely that I lost interest entirely once I became reliant on the mapper; however, I plan to learn how to use hotkeys/macros (whatever a macro is). Is this a good plan?

Like 6 years ago in a MUME-meeting I saw a guy play mume from his cell phone, if that was possible way back then, then surely it's possible now on such a newer gadget?

Anyway, I don't know the actual answer, you'll have to wait for some iPod owner to answer...

You can play from the iPhone with a terminal app...but why?

I could see maybe idling in town and chatting but it would be impossible to xp/pk/etc via that kind of interface.

Did administration recently solicit money for server reasons?

OK, I am thinking then small money, a preservation society. One you can join, maybe with T-Shirts, I would wear a Mume T-Shirt.

Money from the Preservation Society would buy access to web venues and give the logins to members to mess with. Coming at them with Mume Preservation Society could raise interest. With subtlety, the society could create venues, at least, the Preservation Society could record and direct efforts.

all base belongs to us.

hey mume is some old game and mume goes and goes

Someone who knows the legal side of this better will know for sure, but isn't it so that the owners of MUME cannot make any money out of this or else all the Tolkien-lawyers will be up their asses bigtime?

Although maybe it'd be ok if some third party produced those and then donated all the profits to FIRE. I can't imagine those lawyers doing anything about that.

Mume or Elendor mush, perhaps Beleriand (that RP is just clinging to the net atm) had feedback from the Tolkien people. They related that using Tolkien's created world, inhabiting it (so to speak), expanding upon it with other creative works; that was the intention of JRR. I've read that very thing in Tolkien's published letters, BTW.

As it stands we, in our own way, have brought to completion JRR's ideal of expanding Arda (even marred by PvP). No person can miss the many respects of JRR Tolkien here.

Whatever, lawyers may or may not care about published letters or intents, then too, why would anyone care?

My proposal is not legally related to Mume. I don't need a license to solicit in a name I create, on the internet, for any cause, and I think I should claim Mume as a historical and literary cause, as well as a great, text game.

In any event, a Mume Preservation Society is not-for-profit in my intention. It certainly does not involve copyright infringement.

I understand what you're getting at, I just wanted to point out that while we can all certainly give you our full moral support, then it might be legally problematic for any of the management to get officially involved with what you're doing. Btw, I think it could deserve a thread of its own where you describe what it's all about. Plus, possibly also another one on Elvenrunes.

Oh and talking about Tolkien-lawyers, I do seem to recall them harassing Manwe for a few images/pictures that we have/had on the homepage... I guess they're supporting only as long as you're a paying costumer...

Thanks for the input and support. I will consider my ideas again, they were a hasty conclusaion given a re-read of this thread. I also need to hold what Mume means to me and glance at the future, however unforgettable Mume remains, I am just this involved with the mud and not more so, Today. I do want to play, but IRL is demanding and unpredictable.

Nah, just use your mobile phone as a monitor (horizontal) with a keyboard like this

Yep, no F keys.

how about a t-shirt like "argle bargle" or "water moccasins are snakes" those are things players can relate to and i doubt they have any legal issue

I think you're on to something!

And troll-playing people would probably quite like a t-shirt with a text on it saying: "This is my no-size fgc!" 8-)
