MUME Help

CHANGE PASSWORD, PASSWORD

Your password is set using the change password command, or from the account menu using the password command. You need to enter it each time you connect to MUME.

Be sure to choose a good password that you can easily remember, but no less secure than you would for any other computer account. Don't use your character name, your real name, and in particular not a password you use somewhere else, in another MUD or for a computer account!

Beware: unless you connect to MUME using an encrypted connection (see help tls), your password will be sent in plain text over the Internet. This is bad.

Note: all passwords are case sensitive.

Lost password

If you have lost your password, you have to contact an Arata about the possibility of having your password reset.

Technical details

MUME stores passwords as SHA-256 salted hashes (which is not fantastic). However, if your character password was set before Jan 17, 2021, it is stored using MD5 (which is insecure). If set before May 10, 2018, it is stored using DES (which is very insecure).

Legacy character passwords

Old characters may have "character passwords" set. If you (successfully) log in a character, any character password it had will be automatically removed.

What is MUME?

MUME, Multi-Users in Middle-earth, is a multiplayer text-based online game based upon J. R. R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth during the epic wars of the late Third Age between the forces of the Dark Lord and the armies of the Free peoples. MUME is completely at no cost and has been continuously running, expanded, and remastered by a community of volunteers since 1991.
